Coaches That Made Me: Part One

I am passionate about coaching.

Long before I became a coach, and WAY before coaching was even a “thing". I was seeking out help from a variety of people to help me navigate the challenges in my life.

In this blog series I am going to highlight various coaches I’ve had in order to help demystify the coaching process. Hopefully, my stories will help you understand how hiring a coach might help you through your personal and professional challenges.

I hired my very first coach after reading Stephen Covey’s book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. My boss had just left on a medical leave that would last for about a year, and I had been temporarily promoted to her position. At the time, I was working full-time, pregnant with my second child, and was tasked with designing and moving our staff to a new office space. Needless to say, I felt overwhelmed and ill-equipped to handle these new responsibilities. I longed for a mentor to help me navigate the political nuances and provide a safe place to voice my frustrations. I needed a person who was unattached to the outcomes and completely removed from my place of work. So, when I saw that the Franklin Covey organization offered coaching I decided to use all my professional development money that year to hire one.

What a difference it was for me to have someone in my corner. With every issue I presented, my coach asked questions I hadn’t thought to ask myself. He challenged my beliefs and assumptions, and gave me pearls of wisdom that were invaluable. I could relax knowing that each week I had a safe place to share my concerns and process decisions before I had to make them.

That year I designed and oversaw the construction of a beautiful work space for our staff, navigated some tricky negotiations with other departments, managed a staff of six and grew confident in my leadership skills, all while navigating a pregnancy, raising a daughter, being a wife and running a household. This was achieved because I had the unending support of my coach that year.

Questions:

1. Do you want someone in your corner to help you be your best?

2. Are there decisions you need to make and want help sorting through them?

3. Would you benefit from having someone challenge your assumptions and beliefs?

You are a perfect candidate for coaching if you resonate with any of these questions.
